I Love Owls

A great horned owl, above, and a barn owl, below. These birds were on display at Bald Eagle Day last weekend at the Idaho Shakespeare Festival. Both birds are unable to fly because of injuries. Notice the great horned's right wing: a big chunk is missing. The rehab expert holding the barn owl says it was found at the side of the road.

Smashburger Party

"Backstage" at Smashburger on Franklin Road near Boise Towne Square Mall. This is me receiving a lesson in "how to cook the burger." Those who know me, know I am NOT a burger expert :) But I like how this restaurant starts with non-pre-formed patties. I brushed the grill with a little butter, placed the meat on the grill and then used a press to "smash" the hamburger into the grill. Hold the smashed position for 10 seconds to get a good sear on the meat. Season with a salt and pepper mixture.
Ever been to a Johnny Rockets? This is exactly how they do it there, too. The meat is in a refrigerated drawer under the grill.
The "Sin City" burger with everything on it, including a fried egg. And that's an egg bun, which is extra soft. I almost ate the whole thing. It was good, and while I rarely eat burgers, I'm looking forward to another one of these.
One of the servers bringing around samples of other goodies. The grilled Swiss cheese, sauteed mushrooms and spinach sandwich was tasty. (Disclaimer: the food was free that night...and one of the best freebies I've had in a long time. It was also fun, and I LOVED being in the kitchen)

Artsy Pole Toppers

I love details like this in Boise's outdoor decor.

Windows that Talk

This plea is on a window in Downtown Boise.

Downtown Boise Icon

A vintage sign in downtown Boise...and this one is connected to a business that's still going strong after more than 50 years. When you see daredevils cleaning high-rise windows in town, it's a safe bet the work is being done by these folks.

Street Art

Utility boxes throughout downtown have been spiffed up like this as part of a street art project. I like this one because I'm partial to owls and orange-y reds.

Surprisingly, Not a VW Van

Peace, love and do-it-yourself paint job. I've seen similar bright decor on VW vans, but this is the first time I've seen such a display on a Chrysler minivan.

Party Leftovers

That's a lot of empty bottles, and mostly wine. No, not my party, although I know there were a lot of fun football events yesterday. These are likely headed to recycling. Glass is not picked up through curb-side recycling, although there are some drop sites in the area.

Foggy Morning

A half of a day of fog Saturday. I was hoping to see bald eagles during a quick walk along the river. No eagles, but I did see common mergansers, a Northern flicker and a song sparrow. You can see their photos on the BDP extras page. Click here, or follow the link on the right-hand side of the page - scroll down.

Have a Seat

Retro theater seats. You can tell they're "old" because there aren't any drink holders.

Look Up for Metal Decay

A stray neglected sign on the side of a downtown Boise building. I think that was/is a grocery supply company?

What's Hiding Under Your Desk?

This relic isn't under my desk, but I do remember how painful it was to type college reports/essays/assignments while using one...along with a lot of white out and correction tape.

"Over 19" is Code For _ _ _ _

There used to be several "over 19" stores on Chinden Boulevard. I think this is the only one, now. I have friends who own Valley Tools next door. They refer to it as "The Bookstore."

Larger than Life

A fairly recent art installation in Julia Davis Park. The scale of the statue is huge. I was hoping to catch a kiddo nearby for perspective, but too rainy.

Idaho Black History Museum

This is the historic St. Paul Baptist Church building, now home to the Idaho Black History Museum in Julia Davis Park. The IBHM is sponsoring an MLK, Jr. event at the Capitol today.

Hidden Red Gem

It's a mini-barn in a West Boise backyard that is, now, adjacent to a parking lot. See those blue skies? I miss 'em. We're in a rain cycle today.

Jeweled Light

This fancy-pants chandelier is in the lobby of the Boise Contemporary Theater. I think it's fabulous.

Dreaming of Summer Picnics

I'm sure this is a shady spot on a hot summer day. I've noticed this week that a lot of people are talking about being tired of winter. It did start early for us this season.

Closet Library

A glimpse inside a tiny and packed space in the catacombs under a theater in Downtown Boise. Zoom in to see real vinyl albums on the shelves, as well as a wonderful collection of poetry, including volumes from native Idahoan Ezra Pound. I wonder if this is a study library, or a lending library?

Literary Graffiti

I usually don't "get" graffiti, but at least I understand the connections here...kinda.

Draped with Ice

Interesting ice formations may melt away in a few days. Rain is in the forecast.

Snow Dust

A powdery coating of light snow greeted us this morning. This busy bird house is near a public park. Home to house sparrows, I believe, with one peeking out on the left.

Icy Oopsie

I'm guessing this happened when the roads were slick.

High School Hockey

I believe this is match is between Timberline and Eagle High Schools last night at Idaho Ice World. The facility has two rinks. My daughter and a couple of friends were on the other rink.

Pretty Pollution

Lots of hazy color this morning, because we're enduring an inversion. Outdoor burning prohibited and a warning has been posted for those who are extra-sensitive to pollution. Boise is prone to these conditions because the city is at the base of a mountain range, which naturally traps air in the valley under certain weather conditions.

Vintage Backyard Play Equipment

This is the "swing set" I had as a kid. How about you?

Wednesday, January 5, 2011

Frozen River Bank

Um...the ice isn't melting. I wanted to take a quick walk along the Boise River and indeed, it was quick. One picture and I was back in the car!

Icy Claw

The deep freeze continues for Boise...how are you staying warm?

The Party is Over

Paper strings from New Year's Eve party poppers. The holiday vacation season ended this morning as we all headed back to work and back to school.

Super Clear Skies

Amazing how clear the skies and how cold, too. That's Squaw Butte peeking over the foothills.

Cheers! Happy New Year!

Cheers to happy thoughts, positive expectations and joyous experiences in 2011.
