Little Birds Vs. Big Birds

I heard a ruckus and looked up to find these blackbirds harassing this hawk. I think it's a Swainson's hawk, but I'm not a bird expert, so if you know different let me know.

  1. I barely know pigeons and seagulls...

  2. I've see this escort service before. I always assumed the smaller birds were leading the bird of prey away from their nest.

  3. I don't know one hawk from another. Seagulls always make a fuss when eagles are in the vicinity too. It always seems so silly, the eagles never appear to be perturbed in the slightest.

  4. I saw something very similar above the Wal-Mart parking lot here in the WWV the other day. My husband thinks perhaps the hawk was getting a little too close to the smaller birds' nest. I see this frequently, and am never sure what's going on, because, as Wayne said, the bigger birds never seem to care. As if they could turn and snatch the smaller bird up for dinner in an instant, if it felt like bothering. Kind of like a cat being annoyed by a small child or a small dog.

  5. It's a Swainson's Hawk (a light morph) that just ate (notice the full crop).
