Bird House Trio

I saw an Oregon Junco this week. It's a bird that comes to Boise not to nest, but to stay the winter. And it's a sign that winter is on the way...

This machine is harvesting corn by chopping up the grain, stalks and leaves so it can be fed to cattle during the winter months.

House Number "Grave"

This curiosity is at a home along north Five Mile Road. I believe the RIP refers to a house number, with the 'chimney stump' as a clue.

Onions!

Time to bring in the onions. The harvest is underway, and if you're anywhere near a field, you know because of the aroma.

The sign along I-84 just over the Snake River from Oregon. We were happy to see it after a day of driving yesterday.

High Desert

This view along the interstate not far outside Boise is a clear reminder that we live in a high desert.

What's the School District Name?

I'm so used to seeing this, that it wasn't until an out-of-town friend said something that I remembered the odd name painted on all the buses. "Joint School District No. 2."

Red Yard Decor

Spied as a decoration on a property in the Boise Foothills.

Chicken Dinner Road

I consider this valley road a tourist attraction because of its name...and the many legends surrounding the origin. There's more than "one story" to explain it, but homemade fried chicken really is the common thread.

Good Fruit Hunting

A few images from our recent visit to Williamson Orchards. Below is the owner slicing up fruit for free samples and visiting with customers.

Roadside Fruit

At first, I thought this was a fellow peddling locally-grown goods by the roadside. The watermelon could be local, but the mangoes? I don't think so :)

Lizard Butte

This is Lizard Butte, near Marsing, Idaho. And I bet you don't see a lizard. It's the wrong angle. I hear you have to view the butte from town to see the reptile.

Flag Burning in a Park?

Cell phone picture of a partially burned flag jammed in the trash can at a Boise park. What was going on?

Here Comes Christmas!

Lowe's was putting up the Christmas merchandise over the weekend. We're still more than three months out!

Williamson Orchards

We took a short drive to visit Williamson Orchards over the weekend to pick up some honeycrisp apples. Lots of families were there.

Handsome Fellow Flew the Coop

Over the past year, it's become more common to see chickens wandering around neighborhoods. I guess they remember how to get back home after scoping out the area.

Fly Me to the Moon

A rocket-shaped hot air balloon from the festival over the weekend looks like it really is headed for the moon.

Hot Air Balloon Festival

The Spirit of Boise balloon festival took place over the weekend, and what fun! We headed down to Ann Morrison Park early Saturday morning and really enjoyed the adventure. More photos below, and there was even a military fly-over before the balloons launched. Twenty-eight balloons went up that morning.

Until Next Year

A few more images from out time at the Western Idaho Fair. Goldfish were one of the prizes for games.

A Family Guy Stewie, Carebear, Spongebob or Strawberry Shortcake is a much better prize.
Did you ever ride the Zipper? I sure never did when I was young, and it's not an option anymore.
Two giant ferris wheels this year. I can do these. We really had fun during our short fair visit. We need to make more time next year/

Pepper-palooza

I think the pepper entries were the most numerous and diverse this year in the agriculture competition at the Western Idaho Fair. Made me wish I had grown peppers.
