Some images from the Curb Cup competition yesterday in Downtown Boise. The public was given tokens to vote on their favorite street performances. More photos on the extras page, click here. And there's a slideshow, which you can see on YouTube by clicking here.

Baby Quail

This is always a popular exhibit in the small animal barn at the Western Idaho Fair: watching quail hatch. Notice how this is just the right height for kids.

The Western Idaho Fair

I really didn't think we'd be at the fair after dark last night, but we sure had fun. Animals, fried food and carnival rides!

Farming Relic

Look how the front wheel has sunk into the ground. This tractor has been sitting here for a while.

Louie's Ghost

The neglected sign still hangs on the bricks beside the parking lot....but Louie's downtown location closed a few years ago. I miss having them downtown.

This Sign is Hot

Geothermal heating has long been part of the history of Boise, with warm and hot springs aquifers running under sections of town. Boise has the largest direct geothermal system in the country. Close to 60 buildings use geothermal for heating systems. Boise artist Ward Hooper designed this plaque, which was unveiled for buildings last year.

Natural Tree Art

I don't think this is a healthy thing, but it's colorful and interesting. Tree branches everywhere this morning when I went on my jog. We had winds gusting to 70 mph last night.

Pine White Butterfly

These butterflies have been everywhere in the yard this week. I believe this is a pine white butterfly, and I don't remember seeing this many last year. The caterpillars can strip evergreen trees when they have a prolific year. (if I've misidentified this butterfly, please let me know)

Pronghorn Family

On our weekend adventure in the foothills, we came across this pronghorn family. They're often referred to as antelope, even though technically, they aren't true antelope.

Squaw Butte

This is a different perspective on Squaw Butte, which I've featured a few times. From a distance, it looks like it stands alone, even though it's part of the Boise Front. It's easier to see the connection when closer to the butte.

Hummingbird Banding Day

This was one of the set ups at the hummingbird banding north of Boise Saturday morning. Fishing line is tied to the door on the left. The person in control of the line to drop the door is about 15 feet away. After the door is down, a trained volunteer reaches in to get the hummingbird and puts it in a mesh bag until it gets its turn for "jewelry" - a leg band.
Fred Bassett bands the birds, weighs them and takes some measurements. The one above is getting tail feathers measured. Black chinned were the most common ones caught. Also banded were rufous hummingbirds and a calliope - which is the smallest hummingbird in North America. One of the birds caught already had a band. I haven't heard yet where that one was originally banded.
Here's a female black chinned hummingbird.

These folks had a picnic and a bocce ball match at our neighborhood park on one of the cooler evenings this week.

Mom's Coffee

Isn't this a darling coffee shop? It wasn't open when I stumbled upon it, but I want to try it out soon.

Boise Tweet Up

Some of the folks attending the Boise Tweet Up last night at the Falcon Tavern. The Tweet Up is a regular casual gathering so people who use social media can network in person, and help each other by sharing strategies, tips and tricks. Those new to Twitter, Facebook, Linked In, etc., are also welcome to attend to learn how to use those channels on their mobile devices. More pictures posted on my Facebook page today :) http://ht.ly/2nSTK

When I Was a Kid...We Didn't Have Video Games

Did you have one of these water games when you were a kid? My daughter chose one at a toy store this week because of stories I had shared with her about how these were our "video games." She thinks it's cute, but not as fun as the Nintendo DS.

Forgotten Tractor

Parked probably for good.

A bit of haze brings pretty sunsets :) Have a great weekend!

Duelling Graffiti

Or, is it a graffiti conversation? I believe technically, this destruction of property is called "tagging." I remember when it was rare to see this in Boise....now, it's common.

Adelmann Building

A mural with an historic theme on the side of the Adelmann Building, which did house a car dealership long ago. The building has been home to many businesses over the years. Currently, it's an event center, a Tully's Coffee Shop and a French restaurant.

Cell Phone Tower in Disguise?

At least I *think* it's a cell phone tower. It's on some church property, but not very close to the building. What do you think?
