Power Line Shoes

A pair of shoes hanging over a power line. We see this every so often. Someone once told me it was a sign for drug dealers - then someone else told me that was an urban myth. A friend who worked at a power company told me it was a pain, because they had to go remove the shoes. They chalked it up to pranksters playing a joke on their friends by stealing their shoes and throwing them to the lines.

  1. I wonder if those are size 9? I need a new pair.

  2. I see this too. I've never heard any explanation for it but I'm inclined to doubt the drug dealer story. Here drug dealers kill each other they don't steal the others guy's Nikes to teach him a lesson.

  3. I've seen this in other city photo blogs too. So strange, and wasteful!

  6. I grew up in Brooklyn - arguably the birthplace of the practice - and we used to throw our gym sneakers over the wires when they had worn out. Usually at the end of the school year.

I have been known to throw an old pair in the air with my kid to this day.

My favorite pair are the ones over Idaho Street @ 8th.
